Healthy Strong Bones

Recently one of our clients completed a well woman check up. The doctor was amazed to discover that this 50 year old lady’s bone mineral density score was the highest she had seen for her age, and the equivalent of a very high score for a 25 year old woman.

Needless to say, our client was extremely pleased with this results. Its one of those hidden, but none the less, important benefits of a quality fitness programme and good eating habits. Long term having a high Bone Mineral Density prevents Osteoporosis.

What exercise is best for the bones ?

This particular client has been following a regular running programme for 5 years, plus weekly resistance exercises. It is these weight bearing and impact type exercises that are best for developing strong bones. The impact stress on the bones of supporting the body against gravity as it makes contact with the ground stimulates the bones to thicken, increasing their density.

Walking, running, weight training, games, dancing, step and aerobics are all perfect activities. Stairmaster, Cross trainer, Rowing, Cycling and Swimming will not however be beneficial as these are not weight bearing activities.
