Calculate Fat in Food

Recently we suggested that stocking up with healthy snack bars each week would help you maintain energy levels and help you avoid junk food snacking.

Some of you have been asking us, what makes a food healthy or not?

Here is a quick guide to examining fat content of foods to help you decide whether you should eat them or not.

1. Look at the ingredients list on the label
2. Check out the number of grams of fat
3. Times this number by 10 giving you total fat calories
4. Check the total calories
5. Compare this total with the fat total

High Fat Foods = Fat calories are about 50% of Total Calories. Avoid these foods

Moderate Fat Foods = Fat Calories are about 30-40% of Total Calories. These foods are fine in reasonable amounts.

Low Fat Foods = Fat Calories are below 25% of Total Calories. Having most of your foods in this category will help you stay in shape and lose weight.

Remember: Substituting high fat for high sugar will not help you. Choose whole meal, high fibre, fresh foods. Avoid refined, pre-packaged and processed foods or meals.
