Colds and Flus
With so many people coming down with colds and flu at the moment, the above subject matter seems rather topical.
How to prevent them:
Viruses are ever present in our environment, especially in dry and crowded
spaces such as offices. Catching a cold or suffering with flu is not so much
about exposure to the virus (as we are exposed to them continually) but rather
a matter of your personal susceptibility at the time. To prevent regular colds
and flu you need to keep your immune system strong.
Stress has a massive weakening influence on the immune system. Studies have
shown that if many people were exposed to the same virus, the ones who were
suffering high stress would be twice as likely to develop symptoms.
The steps you should take to strengthen your immune system and reduce stress
are:
1. Take regular CV exercise to keep fit and reduce stress.
2. Practice yoga, tai chi, relaxation techniques or meditation to relax most
effectively.
3. Avoid excessive amounts of stimulants in your diet (sugar, refined
carbohydrates, caffeine and alcohol) as these weaken your system.
4. Boost your diet with vitamins and minerals, especially the antioxidants A,
C, E, zinc and selenium, to boost your natural defenses.
5. Take Garlic and / or Echinacea which are also proven prevention supplements.
6. Other preventative methods - along the lines of what mother used to tell you
- are: Always wash your hands regularly!
