Is it Pain or Just Discomfort?

There is a difference between pain caused through exercise and simply being uncomfortable through exercise. When we exercise, we are increasing the demand on the body to perform basic functions, not to mention the extra effort needed for the exercise itself. As heart rate increases, this feels more uncomfortable; as our muscles approach fatigue through resistance exercise, this feels uncomfortable; and also our state of mind can come into if you are not particularly ‘up’ for it.

Pain is a legitimate response from the body and is necessary to help protect us from injury but sometimes it is easy for us to dismiss being uncomfortable for pain. Learn to distinguish between the two and push through physical or mental barriers that are preventing you from maximizing your results; as suggested in bulletin No.1 increased intensity leads to increased results.

Bottom Line – Do not push through actual pain but do get out of your comfort zone and push through those last few reps or those last couple of minutes!

‘You should never try and ‘run through’ pain from a muscle, joint, or any other part of the body, as you risk serious injury ignoring such signals’ – Tim De Frisco, Runner’s World 2006.
